Indiana Jones and the Perils of the Fourth

New film nineteen years in the making…

It seems everyone’s favourite archaeologist is back – not that he has much completion, how many good looking archaeologists do you know…?

The ‘midas’ duo of Spielberg and Lucas returns with the final piece of the jigsaw – Harrison Ford having dusted off the moth balls from his battered leather jacket.

Will it live up to the first three films? The indications are good — sharp script, excellent cast and detailed settings, all worked on to appeal to the army of fans plus to draw in a whole new brigade.

The initial instalment ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ (later pre-fixed with Indiana Jones and the …) was launched in 1981, becoming the first of three films (Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom 1984, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 1989). The swashbuckling adventures are set in the 1930’s, involve the part archaeologist, part teacher, part hero and general all round good guy Dr Henry Walton ‘Indiana’ Jones Jnr battling Nazi’s (in general) or some other obvious baddie whilst rescuing some ancient artefact. We even got to meet his ‘dad’ Dr Jones Snr, who else could pull this off??

For the new release the action has moved on slightly to the 1950’s with the arch enemy now being the Soviets (the cold war influence of course). In addition to all the factors that made the other movies great, they will be the usual multitude of creepy crawlies and hidden traps (the roller ball moment alone has spawned a thousand spin offs…!).

With Indiana now coming under the Disney fold, one thing is guaranteed a plethora of toys, action figures and merchandise; the theme parks have kept the Indie story alive and well all these years with replica clothing and such like. The toys to really look out for are the 1980’s original products in particular the action figures and sets by Kenner (Raiders) and LJN (Temple of Doom). These were dwarfed at the time by Star Wars and so range was limited, making them much more desirable now. Buy them… if you can find them!
